Normal service has been resumed this awards season, with the return of the Golden Raspberry Awards (lovingly referred to as The Razzies) ceremony to its usual eve-of-Oscars date. Last year’s move to April Fools’ Day received the thumbs down from the Golden Raspberry Foundation’s voters, who all preferred the original date.
And this year’s Razzies confirmed something that we already knew – Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II was the prime turkey of turkeys. It took no less than seven of the spray-painted awards – admittedly not quite on the scale of Adam Sandler’s clean sweep last year, but a conclusive victory nonetheless. If you can call it a victory.
The film scooped Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Kristen Stewart), Worst Supporting Actor (Taylor Lautner), Worst Screen Couple (Taylor Lautner and 12 year old Mackenzie Foy), Worst Director (Bill Condon), Worst Screen Ensemble and Worse Remake, Rip Off or Sequel, the last one being chosen by readers of the Rotten Tomatoes website by online ballot.
As if to add insult to injury, Stewart’s award was for two films, the second one being Snow White And The Huntsman. Razzies founder John Wilson described her performances as “so expressionless, she might as well be a brick wall.”
But she has some way to go if she wants to live up to Adam Sandler who, after last year’s clean sweep, was clearly determined to hold on to the Worst Actor award – and succeeded. His performance in That’s My Boy secured his status as a Razzies veteran – and the film also took Worst Screenplay, beating Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II by just one vote.
Rihanna followed in the footsteps of singers who think they can act – and can’t – by winning Worst Supporting Actress for her film debut in Battleship. She had just 68 lines of dialogue to mangle, including classics such as “Kentucky Fried Chicken!”, “Boom” and “Sucker’s really jumping around.” A challenge, surely, even for a good actress. The only way is up.
Unsurprisingly, the recipients of this year’s awards were “otherwise engaged” when it came to collecting their trophies, even though the ceremony took place just a stone’s throw from the Oscars venue. Perhaps the fact that it was at the Continental Breakfast Room of the Holiday Inn Express had something to do with it ……
