LFF First Looks: Philomena

Philomena. More than just a crowd pleaser.

Philomena. More than just a crowd pleaser.

Stephen Frears’s Philomena is already gathering a head of steam in advance of this year’s awards season.  With a finely tuned script from Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope and a crystal clear performance from Judi Dench, you can expect to hear its name among the nominees for the big gongs.  Especially as it’s backed by Harvey Weinstein.

But it’s up against one of the most impressive and competitive batch of likely contenders in years, so it’ll need every bit of that Weinstein might to carry off the trophies.

Not that it matters over-much.  This is a warm, compassionate film that brings together some of the major talents in British cinema.  Read my review on Filmoria, http://www.filmoria.co.uk/2013/10/philomena-review/

Philomena is released nationwide on 1 November.
