The irony of reviewing a movie about a film critic hasn’t escaped me. The fact that it’s a documentary about Roger Ebert, the first one ever to win a Pulitzer Prize, makes it more ironic – and more daunting. Doing the film justice is one thing, doing the man justice is quite another.
But that’s what the director Steve James sets out to do with Life Itself, based on Ebert’s memoirs. And it’s a delicate balance, combining respect and admiration with truth and sometimes pain, especially in the later stages of his life.
Does my review deserve the trademark double thumbs up from the man himself? Check it out on Filmoria.co.uk and judge for yourself.
Life Itself is released around the UK on Friday, 14 November.
